Find dispersed camping near me
Find the national forests and grasslands closest to you. Dispersed camping is allowed on most national forest land.
This tool lists national forests and grasslands only. BLM land will be added as we check each field office’s rules: near towns, a lot of it is day-use only.
How this works
Dispersed camping is camping on public land outside a developed campground. Forest Service policy allows it on national forest and grassland land unless an area is posted closed or closed by an order.
This tool measures from the center of your ZIP code, or from your location, to the nearest national forest land. It lists the five closest national forests and grasslands within 250 miles.
Each forest still sets its own stay limits, fire restrictions and closures, and private land sits inside many forest boundaries. Check the forest’s rules, then scout a spot on the map.
BLM land is left out for now. The BLM also allows dispersed camping on most of its land, but many parcels near towns are day-use only, and we add a field office only once its rules have been checked.
Questions
- How do I find dispersed camping near me?
- Start with the nearest national forest, which this tool finds for you. Then check that forest’s rules and look for an established spot along a road that is open to vehicles. The scouting map shows land ownership, open roads and the published rules together.
- Can I camp anywhere in a national forest?
- On most national forest land, yes, unless an area is posted closed or closed by an order. Developed recreation sites, lakeshores and some wilderness areas often have extra limits, and every forest sets its own stay limit.
- How is the distance measured?
- In a straight line from the center of your ZIP code, or from your location, to the nearest national forest land. Driving distance is usually longer.
- Why is the nearest forest so far away?
- Most national forest land is in the West. In much of the Midwest and the plains the nearest national forest can be a few hours away, and state forests and other public land are not included here.
